This was the standard introductory text-volume on textual criticism used in seminaries before the appearance of Metzger's Text of the New Attestation. Discusses the role that atypical readings take played in the analysis of scribal habits, and examines atypical readings in the early fragmentary papyri of John'southward Gospel. Confirms earlier research showing that most singular readings are mere variations of spelling or word-guild, but substitutions and harmonisations to context are also common. Omissions are more mutual than additions.
